North Carolina has over 7,000 certified wildlife habitats registered with the National Wildlife Federation. The US total has over 300,000. There are 16 towns/cities in the state that have been certified as "Community Wildlife Habitats". We offer support and resources to help create your own wildlife friendly landscape. Habitat loss is the primary cause for the decline in wildlife species. As natural resources are altered including food, water, and shelter it becomes more difficult to relocate. With development comes fragmentation making it dificult for animals to find mates.

What is a Wildlife Habitat?

Every wildlife habitat is defined by a specific combination of physical and biological characteristics, and it is this precise combination — not any single feature in isolation — that determines which species can persist there. Ecologists generally identify four essential habitat components required to support a given species: food, water, cover, and sites suitable for reproduction and rearing of young.

However, the specific form each of these components must take varies considerably among species, reflecting the physiological and behavioral adaptations each has developed over long periods of evolutionary history in response to its particular environment. As a result, habitat suitability is species-specific: a location that meets the requirements of one species may be entirely unsuitable for another, even within the same general ecosystem.
